Learning Studio Update

The Learning Studio on the first floor of Sprague is on schedule to be open and ready for business on August 30th. We’re still wrestling with some logistical issues regarding security and staffing but we’re very excited about the new space and the opportunities it will offer the HMC community.

Before I go any farther, let me first announce that we will be hosting an informal preview in the Learning Studio on Tuesday, August 24th from 9:00-11:00 and from 2:00-4:00. This is a time when you can stop by, take a tour, ask questions, and see how things work. We’ll host a more formal Open House later in the semester.

The Learning Studio Classroom will be in EMS by August 30th as well and can be scheduled for individual classes through the EMS web site at http://emsweb.claremont.edu/HMC/. We have 45 dual-boot MacBook Pro laptops available for use in the classroom as well as the standard built-in video projector, DVD/VHS player and screen. There’s also a floor-to-ceiling whiteboard, mobile whiteboards, and 2 mobile LCD panels. The furniture in the classroom is very flexible. Faculty can move the tables around or choose from 3 standard layouts. I should also mention that we are in the process of dismantling the Mac and PC labs in the basement of Parsons. They are no longer available for scheduling in EMS.

In addition to the the classroom space the Learning Studio offers a wide variety of furniture and equipment for working alone or in groups. Sixteen dual-boot iMacs, 2 multimedia stations with video editing software, 2 scanners, comfortable armchairs and sofas, movable screens for creating private areas, movable tables and movable whiteboards and LCD panels are among the amenities you can enjoy.

The Learning Studio was funded in major part by the Fletcher Jones Foundation with additional funding from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation and CIS operational funds.
